Since her call to the Bar in 1995, Gwendoline has worked with clients in the areas of employment and labour law, and dispute resolution. Her recent work in dispute resolution includes:
- advising a local government in a dispute over recycling facilities
- advising a local government in respect of a claim to set aside a tax sale of large-scale industrial property
- defending a local government against a claim by a First Nation that the local government owes a duty to consult and accommodate the First Nation
- advising a local government and officials against a claim of defamation by a former elected official
- acting for a local government before the Environmental Appeal Board
- advising a local government on a contract dispute with a service provider
- acting for a local government in a dispute over sewer upgrades.
Her recent work in employment and labour law includes:
- drafting and reviewing employment contracts
- advising local governments on workplace policies on topics such as respect in the workplace, social media, and reporting abuse of children and vulnerable adults
- advising local governments on collective agreements, including provisions on mandatory retirement for firefighters, transfers within departments, and accumulation of sick time
- advising local governments on dismissals of union and non-union employees, including the conduct of statutory hearings.
Gwendoline is a frequent speaker and writer on litigation and employment issues, and the founding co-author of a textbook on employment standards law. Gwendoline is a strong advocate of continuing training and education. She sits on the Board of Directors of the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia, the pre-eminent continuing education body for lawyers in British Columbia, and is a former adjunct professor of civil litigation at the University of British Columbia.
